Backs to wall in Soweto derby

29 January 2016 - 02:36 By Mark Gleeson

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates go head to head for the third time this season tomorrow, but it has been a long time since both sides approached a derby so significantly off the pace in the Premier Soccer League title race. It means this is a must-win encounter for both sides, but for different reasons.Chiefs might be unbeaten away from home in the league this season, but have lost twice at home - the second time on Sunday at their alternate "home" ground in Cape Town against Platinum Stars, which left them eight points behind the log leaders. It might only be the halfway point of the season, but that is a significant number of points to try to haul back if Chiefs are to retain their title.Pirates, who spent the first half of the season preoccupied with their bid to win the African Confederation Cup, have already given up any hope of a first championship since back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012.Pirates, who have one game in hand, languish in 11th place and have posted just a single victory in their last eight matches. They need to start winning, however, even if just to get some momentum going. Most of the focus on the team has been on the future of coach Eric Tinkler, whose position is perilous again after the embarrassment of defeat to Jomo Cosmos last weekend. The Soweto derby is M1 in the Soccer 6 pool of the weekend. Let's look at the rest of the games:Other matches in the Soccer 6 pool:M2: Polokwane City v Jomo CosmosCity continue to have a topsy-turvy season after beating Supersport 4-1 at home a fortnight ago and losing 5-0 to Wits last Friday. Cosmos won only their third game when they upset Pirates.M3: Barcelona v Atletico MadridThey are level at the top of La Liga, although Atletico have played one game more after Barcelona had a fixture postponed to compete at the Club World Cup in Japan. Barca have won all of the last five meetings between the two and only lost four times at home on the last 24 visits Atletico have made.M4: Supersport United v Free State StarsSupersport play for the first time since Gordon Igesund departed as coach and his replacement by Stuart Baxter. Stars have won twice and lost once since new coach Gianni Salinas took over.M5: Mpumalanga Black Aces v Chippa UnitedHigh-flying Aces suffered a surprise defeat away at struggling University of Pretoria on Sunday after a run of five successive victories took them briefly to the top of the PSL. Chippa appointed Dan Malesela coach just before Christmas and he has since delivered three wins in his first four matches in charge and lifted the club up to sixth place.M6: Maritzburg United v Mamelodi SundownsMaritzburg play for the first time since the death of Mondi Cele in what promises to be an emotional affair. League leaders Sundowns are unbeaten in their previous 15 matches in all competitions.Derby draw predictedWho will win the Soweto derby? People are finding this hard to answer and can't be blamed because both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs are struggling. The safest prediction is a draw.Farouk Khan (analyst and former Chiefs assistant coach):Prediction: Draw"Both teams have not been playing the type of football we know and have fallen behind the likes of Sundowns and Aces."Pollen Ndlanya (former Pirates and Chiefs striker)Prediction: Draw"Look at the previous performances of both teams. They lost. A lot of people will say Kaizer Chiefs will win this one based on the position on the table, but I think it will finish as a draw."Stanton Fredericks (former Pirates and Chiefs midfielder)Prediction: Draw"I think it will finish 1-1. I would love to be proven wrong and see attacking football, but the situation for both teams at the moment will call for them to be cautious."..
