Legal actions on debt show decrease in 2016

The total number of civil summonses issued for debt decreased by 13.4% in the first quarter of 2016 compared with the first quarter of 2015‚ Statistics SA revealed on Thursday. In its report for the civil cases for debt‚ Statistics SA said civil judgments recorded for debt decreased by 11.2% in the first quarter of 2016 compared with the first quarter of 2015.The total value of civil judgments recorded for debt decreased by 5.8% in the first quarter of 2016 compared with the first quarter of 2015.In March 2016‚ 22 418 civil judgments for debt‚ amounting to R362-million‚ were recorded.The largest contributors to the total value of judgments were:- Money lent (R107.2-million or 29.6%);- Other’ debts (R84.8-million or 23.4%); and- Services (R65.6-million or 18.1%). - TMG Digital/TMG Local Government..
