Pasma boycotts 'toothless' Fees Commission

The Pan Africanist Student Movement of Azania (Pasma) on Thursday boycotted the Fees Commission into the feasibility of a fee-free higher education in South Africa‚ dismissing it as "toothless" and a waste of time. The organisation was scheduled to make a presentation before the commission sitting in Pretoria on Thursday morning‚ but its representatives were nowhere to be seen. However‚ its spokesman Vusi Mahlangu addressed media representatives outside the commission on Thursday afternoon giving reasons why Pasma did not attend. "I received a call from the leadership which told me they decided to boycott the commission‚ which they see as a toothless circus‚" Mahlangu said.He said the commission was a waste of time and the organisation will push ahead with its four non-negotiable demands.These are free and quality higher education for all from 2017‚ the scrapping of all student debt‚ the readmission of all expelled students and the dropping of all charges against students who were arrested as part of the #FeesMustFall movement protests.President Jacob Zuma appointed the commission following widespread protests by university students last year against the high costs of university fees.The commission will inquire into and make recommendations on the feasibility of a fee-free higher education and training in South Africa...
