Home at last: Doggy tale has a happy ending

13 September 2016 - 16:26 By Dave Chambers

Two dogs that were missing for 11 days after being picked up by City of Cape Town law enforcement officers were reunited with their owners on Tuesday. Nikki Rushin and Brent February‚ of Muizenberg‚ were asked to go to Mitchells Plain police station‚ where their Jack Russells - Jake‚ 3‚ and Jess‚ 1 - were waiting for them."It was just a beautiful moment‚ and the dogs were over the moon‚" said Rushin‚ 26. "We were giving up hope."Law enforcement officers picked up the dogs on Prince George Drive and they were captured in a car on a petrol station's CCTV system. They were traced with the help of the City of Cape Town special investigations unit after Rushin raised the alarm on Facebook."They were being kept at an officer's house‚ and had clearly been well looked after and well fed‚" said Rushin."We were told the officer is remorseful and we're just really relieved that he was a good person and an animal lover."The dogs escaped after Jess dug a hole under a concrete wall. "We've locked them inside the house today‚" said Rushin.Mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith‚ who went to Mitchells Plain to hand back the dogs‚ said they were recovered in Khayelitsha."The matter is currently still under investigation by the city’s special investigations unit and for this reason we cannot provide further details‚" he said."We must stress‚ however‚ that the dogs were not stolen but were stray at the time that they were collected by law enforcement."The issue being investigated is why the dogs were not surrendered to the animal pound‚ as is required by the standard operating procedure."TMG Digital/Cape Newsroom..
