Council of Provinces to debate consumer rights

Fifty-three years ago‚ US President John F Kennedy outlined the definition of consumer rights.On Tuesday‚ the National Council of Provinces will be holding a debate on World Consumer Rights Day “under the theme: ‘Advancing our national resolve to protecting the social and economic welfare of consumers’ ”.World Consumer Rights Day was first observed on March 15‚ 1983‚ 21 years after JFK addressed Congress on his vision of consumer rights – marking the first time any politician had formerly set out such principles.Consumers International says the day is “an opportunity to promote the basic rights of all consumers‚ for demanding that those rights are respected and protected‚ and for protesting the market abuses and social injustices which undermine them”.South Africa’s National Assembly will be debating rights “human rights in the context of building a national democratic society underpinned by the vision of a united‚ non-racial‚ non-sexist‚ democratic and prosperous South Africa” on Tuesday...
