Public comments invited on IEC commissioner replacement

“Interested persons and organisations” have until February 10 to comment on candidates shortlisted for the vacancy of part-time commissioner on the Independent Electoral Commission. That’s according to Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs‚ which said on Monday that it had noted the announcement last week by the Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng of possible replacements for RaenetteTaljaard‚ who resigned last year.“The names on the shortlist should stand the test of public scrutiny and the Committee is of the view that the IEC requires men and women of integrity as it continues to deliver credible elections‚” the committee said in a statement.“The Committee therefore further notes the announcement by the panel to allow interested persons and organisations to comment on the shortlisted candidates. This progressive move seeks to enable and enhance participatory democracy and ensure that the preferred candidate will get universal acceptance.”The resignation of Taljaard‚ who is now director of the Helen Suzman Foundation‚ left the IEC with no serving female representation.Last year‚ President Jacob Zuma restarted the process of listing candidates after an original list was rejected by Parliament for lacking sufficient choices with regards to gender and race.The candidates will be interviewed on February 17.They are: Lovetta Carline Bolters‚ Teressa Conradie‚ Lourens Johannes De Klerk‚ Isobel Elise Konyn‚ Janet Love‚ Sibusiso Armstrong Magwaza‚ Nomsa Praisy Masuku‚ Mamodupi Mohlala-Mulaudzi‚ Madibeng Chris Mokoditwa‚ Dr Oupa Moshebi‚ Nkosikhulule Xhawulengweni Nyembezi‚ Leago Stella Takalani and Johannes Collen Weapond...
