'People's lives are under threat' in jobs for cash probe: Education Department

The Basic Education department says it is making "proper preparations" before releasing the findings of an investigation into the sale of school principal and teacher jobs because "people's lives are under threat"."Key to the investigation was the protection of witnesses and whistle-blowers hence the involvement of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development and a forensic team of investigators‚" said Elijah Mhlanga‚ spokesperson for the Department of Basic Education."...The matter is sensitive and people's lives remain under threat. It is for that reason that proper preparations must be made before the report can be made public‚" he said in a statement announcing that Minister Angie Motshekga would now release the report on April 15 after a series of meetings with government‚ union and school officials.The comment follows the Democratic Alliance questioning why the report had not been released in mid-March‚ as previously scheduled by the department.The task team was set up last year following reports that South African Democratic Teachers' Union (Sadtu) members were selling principal and deputy principal posts at schools for upwards of R30‚000 each.In December‚ Motshekga presented some of the findings of the interim report prepared by the task team.The interim report stated that there is corruption and undue influence in the appointment of teachers and principals‚ and that government systems are weak in safeguarding appointments.
