The Democratic Alliance has opposed the proposed appointment of Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane as Thuli Madonsela’s successor as public protector. Speaking during the Public Protector debate in Parliament on Wednesday evening‚ DA MP Glynnis Breytenbach raised issues such as inadequate qualifications and experience as well as her past work at the State Security Agency (SSA) as reasons Mkhwebane would be an unfit public protector. "The DA has decided to not support this nomination. This is on the grounds that her appointment would be unreasonable as she was by no means the best candidate for such a position and was illogically preferred over other qualifying candidates‚" said Breytenbach. The former National Prosecuting Authority senior prosecutor said while the party would be pleased if Mkhwebane turned out to be a suitable candidate‚ concerns that she might have been a spy in China needed to be addressed."We have been advised that the time spent as an immigration officer in China is also suspicious‚ having been informed that this was simply coded language for being on the payroll of the SSA‚" Breytenbach said.Breytenbach said that Mkhwebane‚ a former Department of Home Affairs director‚ former senior investigator at the Office of the Public Protector and a former analyst for the State Security Agency‚ had little relevant experience compared with four of the other candidates. She also expressed her misgivings about Mkhwebane’s move from Home Affairs to the State Security Agency.Mkhwebane was selected by an ad hoc committee tasked with finding Madonsela’s successor over the course of a month. After this process is concluded‚ all that will be needed is a signature from President Jacob Zuma to make Mkhwebane the next public protector...
