A field guide has captured an 'rare sighting' of a male lion attacking a baby hyena in a territorial takeover at Kings Camp, northern Kruger National Park.

Almero Klingenberg, who captured the action near Timbavati on the 26 November, posted on the Kruger Sightings YouTube video that he'd never seen anything like it before.

The footage shows two male lions sleeping; they hear hyenas communicating and immediately jump up to investigate the sound.

“One of the male lions known, as Timbavati male lions, grabbed a young hyena cub from the den and immediately bit into him. He also shook him around allowing the youngster no chance of survival,” said Klingenberg.

The lions then chase the hyenas away and begin to mark their territory.

“At the end of the day the victory was that of the lions,” Said Klingenberg.
