Hurricanes book home Super rugby final

30 July 2016 - 18:00 By Craig Ray

The Hurricanes booked a second consecutive home Super Rugby final after a suffocating the Chiefs to win 25-9 in Wellington. The Chiefs made most of the running‚ dominating territory and possession but made an unusually high number of mistakes and poor options‚ which cost them in the end. Co-captain Sam Cane was the main culprit with two of his mistakes leading directly to 14 points for the Hurricanes‚ who were inspired by a brilliant performance from flyhalf Beauden Barrett. Cane’s first howler came late in the first half when he threw a soft intercept pass‚ which Barrett latched on to from the halfway line before sprinting unopposed to the line. Cane later conceded a silly penalty when he played a man off the ball and in the ensuing play‚ Hurricanes No 8 Victor Vito went in for the match’s decisive try. Barrett was the mastermind behind the game’s opening try‚ when he collected a loose ball deep in his own territory‚ chipped ahead‚ collected and then made a deft offload close to the Chiefs line for centre Willis Halaholo to score. Barrett scored 15 tries with two conversions and two penalties adding to his own try‚ but it was his ability to create chances from scant possession that stood out. After the opening try the Chiefs slotted a penalty via fullback Damian McKenzie but then inexplicably refused to kick for posts during a spell in which they were on top and earning numerous penalties. They spent nearly 10 minutes camped inside the Hurricanes 22-metre area midway through the first half‚ but refused to take a shot at goal after being awarded repeated penalties by referee Angus Gardener. Superb Hurricanes defence‚ coupled with some cynical offside play saw the home team hang on at a crucial time. “We have to give credit to the Hurricanes‚ they defended really well‚ applied a lot of pressure in crucial moments and were sharper than us‚” Chiefs co-captain Aaron Cruden said. “The mistakes inside their 22 tells a story‚ a couple of bounces never went our way and we dropped balls that we have been catching all year. That just released the pressure valve and we weren't able to score the points we needed. "We are extremely disappointed but pretty proud of getting into the semifinals. I think our boys can hold their heads up because we played the full 80 minutes.” Gardener eventually brandished a yellow card against the Hurricanes in the second half when wing Cory Jane was sin-binned for a deliberate knock-on. But even then the Chiefs couldn’t find a way through as their error count mounted. Scorers: Hurricanes – Tries: Willis Halaholo‚ Beauden Barrett‚ Victor Vito. Conversions: Barrett (2).
