Famous name of Highlands Park returns to SA top-flight football

Highlands Park finally kick off their much-awaited return to top-flight football in the country when they meet Baroka FC in the match of the promoted teams at Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa on Tuesday night. If going up to the Premier Soccer League via the time-consuming promotion/relegation playoffs did not put enough pressure on a promoted club‚ Highlands must now also contend with playing catch-up in the fixtures.Other PSL teams have one game under the belt already – some involved in the MTN8 have three – as a club with a famous name makes its return to the top division.Highlands have slowly been revived from the amateur ranks by their owners. The one-time “white Kaizer Chiefs” of SA football may not resemble the star-studded combinations of the late 1970s and early 1980s that dissolved after the sale of the club to Jomo Sono‚ and reincarnation as Jomo Cosmos‚ but the new incarnation might be tough to beat in the PSL.Highlands have made some of the best signings of the off-season.They moved quite swiftly after the playoffs to announce 13 new signings by mid-July‚ including Collins Mbesuma‚ Zamuxolo Ngalo‚ Thanduyise Khuboni‚ Charlton Mashumba and Junior Sibande.Park coach Allan Freese has two good seasons’ experience as a head coach in the PSL for Platinum Stars‚ where he achieved an unprecedented double in 2013-14 of the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout trophies‚ beating Orlando Pirates in both finals. His teams play simple‚ uncompromising and effective football.Freese has prospects at his club such as midfielder Mothobi Mvala‚ who impressed roughing up Brazil in SA’s 1-1 draw in their opening Olympic match in August‚ despite receiving a red card in that match. While Highlands have turned to PSL experience in their signings‚ Baroka have gone another route. The First Division champions from Polokwane had more time to acquire players‚ given their outright promotion‚ and announced their signings in June.Baroka’s charismatic‚ confident coach Kgoloko Thobejane has soaked up the cream of the talent from the NFD with his 13 signings. His team impressed with their football reaching last season’s Nedbank Cup semifinals. Both they‚ and Highlands‚ will need to be cautiously monitored by opposition sides in the PSL this season...
