Hollywood stunner Charlize Theron thinks the beauty industry is going about things the wrong way by discarding middle-aged women for inexperienced 20-year-olds.

Ironically, Theron, the long-serving ambassador for Christian Dior Parfums' J'adore fragrances, has no such worries - even at "almost 40".

The UK's Daily Mail reported that the 39-year-old recently told Women's Wear Daily magazine that women in their 40s were in "their prime".

She is quoted as saying: "It's ironic that we've built the beauty world around 20-year-olds, when they have no f**kin' concept about wisdom, what life is about, have few relationships under [their] belt and not enough hardships to grow into [their] skins and feel confident within [themselves] and to feel the value of who [they] are, not because of a man or something like that."

ABC News said the Mad Max: Fury Road star called maturing in age "such a beautiful thing".

But for society, it's like women "wilt" like "dead flowers", whereas men "are like fine wines - the older they get, the better they get".

"It's such a misconception, and it's such a lost opportunity because that's when I think women are really in the true moment of their sensuality," she said.

On the WWD website, Theron suggested she is unlike most Hollywood stars when it comes to the size of her wardrobe, saying "by considered standards of other closets that I have seen, I think [mine is pretty minute]".

She said "stuff just hanging in my closet" didn't sit well with a "little bit of the African in me".
