Toxins produced by apartheid chemical and biological warfare expert Wouter Basson killed struggle activists, Khulumani support group told the Health Professions Council of SA yesterday.

The group's director, Marjorie Jobson, said: "As a doctor working in casualty departments in township hospitals, I saw the lethal consequences of the teargas and other agents."

Jobson submitted a petition signed by more than 700 anti-apartheid activists and victims of apartheid atrocities calling for Basson's removal from the register of medical practitioners.

On Wednesday another petition by 230 health professionals also called for Basson to be struck off the roll of health professionals.

In December, the council found Basson guilty of unprofessional conduct for his role as head of the apartheid regime's chemical and biological warfare programme in the 1980s.
