Curry the best breakfast

The breakfast of champions for South Africans is curry, chips and cake. And asked with whom they would like to share breakfast, they chose comic Trevor Noah, followed by cricketer AB de Villiers and presenter Bonang Matheba.A national survey of 1 200 adults found that more than half ate leftovers in the morning. Of these, 29% said curry topped their list.The survey was done by Kellogg's Breakfast for Better Days Initiative which, with the endorsement of the Department of Basic Education, feeds 25000 children in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape and the Eastern Cape.The survey found that:14% of respondents said they have breakfast in the car or at work; andA third eat in front of the TV or on the couch.Among the findings is that a quarter of children who eat breakfast are distracted by cellphones."Children require as much guidance with their eating behaviour as they do with any other behaviour. I strongly encourage an 'unplugged' family breakfast," said Johannesburg dietician Jenny Meyer.According to the British Dietetic Association, breakfast helps top up "energy stores you used up during the night while your body repairs and renews itself".The survey found 77% of respondents understood the importance of the first meal of the day. Yet 39% said they missed breakfast.Dietician Kelly Francis said: "A balanced breakfast is one that provides energy from carbohydrates and protein, dietary fibre, vitamins and minerals, while containing little sugar or unhealthy fats."Thousands of children go to school hungry, with the department feeding about nine million every day...
