Style Awards: It ain't what you wear (It's the way you wear it)

Who are the most stylish people in South Africa? That's the question the annual Style Awards tries to answer. Launched by publicist Jill Grogor, the awards have honoured celebrities, sports people, designers and movers in the media for almost 20 years. This year, Grogor has decided to look back at past winners in a variety of categories, including Most Innovative Style, Most Stylish Couple and SA Style Icon, which was won by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela last year.''Instead of having our usual categories, we're doing things differently by honouring 20 style icons who have won in the past," said Grogor. She stressed that the awards recognise individuals who are stylish in the broader sense of the word: the way they conduct themselves in their lives.Previous winners who will be honoured as style icons this year include model Lee-Ann Liebenberg, designer Gert Johan Coetzee, presenter Lalla Hirayama, swimmer Ryk Neethling, presenter Bonang Matheba and businessman Mandla Sibeko.Actress Terry Pheto, a nominee who is a juror for next year's Emmy Awards, said: ''Style is how you express yourself before you start talking - it's your voice. And I believe people with style have more fun with fashion."Nominee Noni Gasa said: ''My style is deliberate: simple garments punctuated by a single statement piece. I like to buy pieces that create talking points."Chef and blogger Kamini Pather, stylist and photographer Trevor Stuurman and chef Benny Masekwameng are nominated as the Next Big Things and former DA MP Tim Harris gets a nod in the Politics of Style category. The awards take place on Sunday with a red-carpet event and champagne reception at Hyde Park Corner, followed by dinner at the Southern Sun Hyde Park Sandton...
