Designer Talk

04 February 2016 - 02:23 By Sandiso Ngubane

Last year fashion editor Chu Suwannapha launched a clothing range at SA Menswear Week under the brand CHULAAP, and immediately earned himself a place among the country's most critically acclaimed designers. ''East Meets South" fused Asian influences with the vibrancy of South African street style, resulting in a colourful, considered, utilitarian collection. On Saturday the second CHULAAP collection will be presented at SA Menswear Week, currently under way in Cape Town. Suwannapha spoke to The Times about the upcoming showcase. How have things panned out since your fashion week debut last year?I still want to keep my range very small and available to those in the know. I need to see the demand first.Did the response to your first range surprise you?The response and appreciation was unexpected. The attention wasn't limited to South Africa but extended to all over Africa, across to the States and Europe as well. It's an unforgettable and priceless time. I expected to make the audience happy but got a standing ovation. What's next? For winter 2016 I was inspired by the ''I See a Different You" trio's trip through Africa [three photographers who travel around the continent and post their impressions of Africa on their blog]. The colour, texture, art and cultures captured through their lenses is inspiring and fascinating. The theme of this year's show is ''Make Art Not War". The show features unconventional military styles with African prints.I'm once again collaborating with other creators including Simon & Mary, Rings & Things and Pichulik. ..
