Garbage collectors halt hearings with demand for interpreters

Pikitup workers due to answer to disciplinary charges have thrown a language curve ball at the City of Johannesburg. They want language interpreters to be present at the disciplinary hearing so they can follow and understand the proceedings.Pikitup, the city's waste management company, ordered 4800 SA Municipal Workers Union members who have been on strike for over three weeks to face a disciplinary hearing at Rand Stadium in Rosettenville yesterday.The workers defied two court orders compelling them to return to work.They are demanding an increase in their salaries and the dismissal of Pikitup managing director Amanda Nair.Vuyani Singonzo, Samwu's regional deputy chairman, said: "The employer had a challenge with the interpretation because, as you know, our members generally speak vernacular languages."The interpreter that was brought in could not properly interpret so the presiding officerdecided to adjourn the meeting and has not yet provided us with the next date of the hearing."Pikitup also released a statement yesterday informing ratepayers that they would not be reimbursed for the month, despite their rubbish not being collected."The refuse removal services fee is a monthly charge that is based on the value of property as per the promulgated city's tariffs."The charge cannot be itemised or allocated to a bin, nor the number of lifts per bin. Neither is it based on the quantity of the waste collected," a City of Johannesburg statement read...
