Student in court over date scam

A Nigerian student who is accused of fleecing South Africa's desperate and lonely women through an online dating scam briefly appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court yesterday. Ndubusi Onyebuchi Ifedoria and co-accused Eworitse Jemide were arrested during a raid on their upmarket residence in West Beach on Thursday.Hawks spokesman Lloyd Ramovha said the suspects targeted mostly women."Some fell for their romance sob stories and deposited substantial amounts into the duo's several fictitious accounts. The number of victims is yet to be determined," he said.Police confiscated laptops, phones and bank cards.Ifedoria is also accused of removing a SIM card from his phone and flushing it down the toilet, for which he has been charged with defeating the ends of justice.Ifedoria's lawyer told the court that he was doing a correspondence course through a college in Pretoria. He would fly between Pretoria and Cape Town to write exams.He is in South Africa on a student visa which expires in 2017. Jemide has been in South Africa since June 1 on a tourism visa.The case has been postponed to 17 June. The suspects were denied bail...
