They might not have the most impressive GDPs, or the best industrial output, but these nations beat everyone else because they have a strong sense of wellbeing.

The annual Happy Planet Index has been released and South Africa placed 128 out of 140 countries.

The country that is happiest is Costa Rica, followed by Mexico. The unhappiest nations are Chad and Luxembourg.

Other countries that are usually considered the best places to live in were nowhere to be seen on the list.

Switzerland, Denmark and even the US placed 24, 32 and 108 respectively.

The index is compiled by the New Economics Foundation, which has the aim of transforming the world economy so it works for people and the planet.

"From climate change to the financial crisis it is clear the current economic system is not fit for purpose.

"We need a transition to a new economics that can deliver for people and the planet," the foundation says.
