Just hours after being detained by Israeli forces, Leigh-Ann Naidoo and several other pro-Palestine activists were released. According to her partner, Kelly Gillespie, Naidoo would be arriving back in South Africa today.Gillespie said they were asking those who want to show solidarity with Palestine to be at OR Tambo international at 2pm to welcome Naidoo home.Naidoo, a pro-Palestine and Fees-Must-Fall activist, was aboard the Women's Boat to Gaza with 12 other women from around the world when the vessel was intercepted by the Israeli Defence Force on Wednesday, just 36 nautical miles from Gaza. She was detained in Israel. The Women's Boat To Gaza mission - co-ordinated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition - described the incident as a "kidnapping" on its Twitter page. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition released an "in case of capture" video on YouTube shortly after the women were detained.Pro-Palestinian lawyers in Israel helped broker the release of detained women and Kelly was notified via the Women's Boat through lawyers in South Africa who received the message on WhatsApp.None of the women was hurt. Naidoo's daughter Lerato was excited about the news and said: ''I can't wait to see my mother.''The women - including a doctor, parliamentarian and a Nobel Peace Laureate - were on a solidarity mission to Gaza with a message to end the Israeli blockade of Palestine.Naidoo's partner of 14 years, and head of anthropology at Wits University, Gillespie, said they last spoke on Tuesday when she inquired about their daughter and the fees protests.Earlier yesterday, Naidoo, who represented South Africa at the 2002 Athens Olympics in volleyball, released a video imploring the government to get involved to secure her release and the SA embassy in Tel Aviv had started liaising with Israeli authorities.Zeenat Adam, spokesman for the Women's Boat to Gaza mission, said the boarding of the vessel and arrest of the women was illegal as the boat had been in international waters.Adam said a similar mission in 2010 was also halted by Israeli forces, and that 10 people were killed when the Israeli army tried to arrest those aboard the boat...
