It is refreshing to know we have educated struggle heroes who want change from the governing liberation movement ("Ramphele's party not settling for second best", February 19).
However, I wonder whether we have room for another political party in South Africa.
If we have, what will Ramphele's Agang bring to opposition politics that we don't have already, other than destabilising the opposition itself?
I don't see her as someone who will appeal to the rural masses or the illiterate.
The DA has managed to make inroads into the ANC's support by garnering much of the vote of educated black people. Because of that, the ANC has vowed to destroy the DA.
Is the ANC starting to employ the same tactics that have kept Robert Mugabe in power for years? Whenever there was a strong opposition coming up, Mugabe used to sponsor prominent activists like Margaret Dongo and Simba Makoni to start political parties. This diluted the opposition vote and left Zanu-PF with a clear majority.
So has the ANC found an ally in Ramphele? Only time will tell.
