Here are some interesting descriptors for you. The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupé is stylistically self-assured. It’s refined but sporty. And it’s the supreme pinnacle of the entire model range. These are all from the marketing folks at Mercedes-Benz – and when you look at their new baby, it’s easy to see why they’re gushing.

The two-door S-Class replaces the CL of old. It’s just landed in South Africa and it proudly takes its place as the flagship vehicle of the Mercedes-Benz line-up. We won’t waffle on about the styling – but it’s really undeniable that the new car is a gorgeous piece of metal.

If you’re well-heeled and indecisive, fear not, as there are only three choices at present: the S 500, S 63 AMG and madcap S 65 AMG. A special Edition 1 package is also available, at an extra cost of course. The “starter” 500 model kicks out 335kW and 700Nm of torque and the 63 AMG delivers 430kW and 900Nm. The monstrous 65 AMG produces 463kW and a tyre-ripping 1000Nm.

Like its four-door sibling, this is available with an exhaustive list of driver assistance features – stuff like Steer Assist, Stop & Go Pilot to make traffic driving a little easier and autonomous braking. But the model also debuts the new active curve function from Mercedes: the vehicle leans into bends almost like a motorcyclist, to reduce lateral forces on you and your passengers. Other highlights are the headlights of the car: you can specify a High Performance lighting package, with 47 Swarovski crystals in either lamp.

Pricing starts at R1,913,000 for the S 500. The S 63 AMG costs R2,499,100 and the S 65 AMG sells for R3,070,700.
