Togolese goalkeeper Kodjovi Obilale remains in a stable condition in Johannesburg's Milpark hospital today following an attack on his country's soccer team, the hospital said.

"Although he remains ventilated, he is responding well to commands and his condition remains unchanged," Professor Elias Degiannis said in a statement.

Obilale, 25, was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries after his team was attacked on arrival in Cabinda, Angola on Friday. The team was en route to the Africa Cup of Nations games when its bus was ambushed.

An assistant coach, the team spokesman and the bus driver were killed in the attack that left eight other people wounded.

On his arrival in Milpark on Saturday, doctors conducted corrective surgery on Obilale after he was shot with a military assault rifle.

"Obilale is in the care of a highly specialised Netcare Milpark Hospital trauma team under Prof Degiannis, assisted by Dr Maurizio Zorio and Prof Ken Boffard," the hospital said in a statement.

ANC national executive committee member Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was expected to visit Obilale this afternoon.
