Zimbabwean police on Monday said they had recovered 11 bodies, including those of five children, from Lake Chivero near the capital Harare.

The people were all presumed to have drowned when their boat had an accident late on Christmas Day.

"We have retrieved all bodies now," Andrew Phiri, a Zimbabwean police spokesman told dpa, adding: "The boat capsized after it was hit by a wave."

Phiri said eight people, including three crew members, survived the accident by swimming to the shores of the crocodile infested Lake Chivero, about 20km south-west of Harare.

The survivors then alerted authorities, who sent in dive-teams to try to rescue the others.

Police also said a game ranger at the same lake drowned on Saturday night after a boat he was in capsized, in an unrelated incident.

As Zimbabwe's tourism sector has picked up again over the last two years, the lake has become popular with visitors.Author: Columbus Mavhunga
