Speaking at a press conference at Ellis Park, Johannesburg, Fifa secretary-general Jerome Valcke said 96% of the total 2.88million purchasable tickets for the tournament had been sold.
"The target is to reach about 97% or 98%, which would correspond with the figures from the past Fifa World Cups and this would make us very happy," said Valcke.
The additional tickets bring to about 160000 the number still available on the Internet, through Fifa's call centre or at ticketing centres and supermarkets in South Africa.
Besides the July 11 final in Johannesburg, tickets for the opening game between South Africa and Mexico on June 11, also being held in Johannesburg, and for the two semi-finals, in Durban and Cape Town, will also be available from today.
At stages over the past few months, extra tickets have become available as Fifa's ticketing agency, Match, returned tickets from unsold World Cup packages. Football associations around the world also returned unsold tickets.
South Africans have snapped up more than a million tickets, taking advantage of special prices for the hosts, starting at about R140 a ticket. The US accounts for the second-largest number of tickets bought. -
