Former apartheid hitman Joe Mamasela, wanted in connection with the murder of his landlord, has handed himself over to the police.

Mamasela, a Vlakplaas death squad member and a self-confessed killer of the Pebco3, was sought by the police after his landlord, Joseph Nhlapo, 49, was found dead with four bullets in his chest at 5pm on Saturday.

Nhlapo's family alleged that Mamasela had killed him during an argument when the former askari refused to move out of his rented house despite being given an eviction notice.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Eugene Opperman confirmed that Mamasela handed himself over to the Soweto police early yesterday.

"The investigations continue and he is currently being interviewed.''
