The Sunday Times scooped awards in two journalism competitions this week.

Investigative journalists Stephan Hofstatter and Mzilikazi wa Afrika took top honours in the Hard News category at the Mondi Shanduka awards on Tuesday.

Their award was for a series of articles on Police Commissioner General Bheki Cele's R500-million building lease deal, which led to an outcry and investigation by the public protector.

Hofstatter and Rob Rose also reigned supreme in the magazines and weekly newspapers category of the Sanlam Awards for Excellence in Financial Journalism, which were presented on Thursday.

Their entry was an exposé on problems and loopholes at the Companies Intellectual Properties Registration Office (Cipro) that had allowed fake companies to be registered.

Sunday Times editor Ray Hartley said: "We are extremely proud of the contribution these journalists are making to building an open and democratic South Africa."
