A former Bafana Bafana and Jomo Cosmos soccer player and four Zimbabweans have been arrested for allegedly being in possession of R3.4-million in stolen goods found in a storeroom in Ga-Rankuwa, north of Pretoria.
The ex-player also previously worked as a member of the coaching staff at Jomo Cosmos and once played for the Turkish side Vanspor.
The arrest of the five followed the hijacking of a truck that was transporting goods from Durban Harbour to the Edcon warehouse in Kempton Park, on the East Rand.
The truck was hijacked in Heidelberg at about 3am yesterday and some of its contents were allegedly found in the ex-player's storeroom five hours later.
He was not at the warehouse during the raid.
This is his second run-in with the law in less than a year.
In November he escaped arrest when police arrested eight people at one of his storerooms in connection with the hijacking of a truck transporting 500 computers.
The ex-player was later arrested and was out on bail at the time of yesterday's arrests.
Warrant Officer Matthews Nkoadi, of the Ga-Rankuwa police, said police and the tactical response unit raided the warehouse yesterday after receiving an alert from the police's intelligence unit.
"On their arrival they arrested four Zimbabweans inside the storeroom [which was] packed with goods in cardboard boxes."
The hijacked truck was found abandoned in Pretoria West.
Nkoadi said the five, aged between 19 and 38, were expected to appear in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate's Court today on charges of being in possession of stolen goods.
More charges will be laid at a later stage.
