VINTAGE FEEL: The Arch's one-of-a-kind book

SOUTH African artist Paul du Toit and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu have joined forces to produce a "one of a kind" book.

The as yet unnamed book will go under the hammer in New York in March to raise funds for The Lunchbox Fund - whose supporters include Tutu and former US president Bill Clinton - and will feature quotes by the former.

Tutu wrote his quotes on vintage paper imported especially from Japan , while Du Toit used a woodcutting technique to illustrate his interpretation of the quotes.

The end product, Du Toit says, reflects "an ancient, timeless book".

"Rather than making drawings, I wanted to create something extra-special and extend the project."

The book is being produced along with other special editions, including a recipe book by chef Mario Batali and a photo album of 10 prints of John Lennon and Yoko Ono by rock photographer Bob Gruen .

Other contributors include Salman Rushdie, Deepak Chopra and musicians Hugh Masekela and Philip Glass.

The "artworks" will be on exhibition from March 6 at Pace Prints in New York, and the auction will take place on March 21.

All proceeds will go to The Lunchbox Fund, which provides a daily meal for impoverished children in South African townships.

Says Du Toit: "It was such an honour to have worked with the archbishop.

"His humour really came through. It was also nerve-racking, because the book is part of history."
