Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi will run for another term in office at the national congress in September, according to a report on Monday.

This means he will not stand for election to the leadership structures of the African National Congress at its elective conference in Mangaung in the Free State in December.

"I'm making myself available in September. That, in my view, rules me out in December. That is my view and I feel very strongly about it," Vavi told the Business Day newspaper.

Vavi has been Cosatu general secretary for 12 years and has indicated in the past that he would not be available for another term.

But last June, the federation's central executive committee asked him to reconsider.

Last month, President Jacob Zuma encouraged labour leaders to serve on the ANC's national executive committee.
