This assurance was given by acting national police commissioner Major-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi during a short visit to KwaZulu-Natal yesterday to assure Mkhize's family that his murder features prominently in the investigation of allegations of misconduct against the Cato Manor Organised Crime Unit.

KwaZulu-Natal Hawks boss Major-General Johan Booysen was suspended last month for allegedly failing to take action against members of the unit.

Mkhize, a taxi operator and chairman of Kwa-Maphumulo Taxi Association, was gunned down during a shoot-out with police in February 2009 - barely three months after he secured a high court interdict to prevent the police from harming him.

He had claimed that he was being sought by the Cato Manor Organised Crime Unit in connection with the murder of Kranskop police Superintendent Zethembe Chonco.

Mkhize had claimed in court that many people on a list of suspects compiled by the police had been killed by police "under questionable and suspicious circumstances". He claimed that his name was on the list.

Seven suspects wanted in connection with Chonco's murder had been killed by members of the unit when they allegedly resisted arrest.

Mkhize's wife and four children are suing the minister of police for R2.3-million .
