Around 14,000 wildcat strikers at Gold One's Cooke 4 shaft in Ezulwini on the West Rand have been suspended, the company said on Thursday.

"A suspension notice has been served. It was communicated via bulk sms, hostels, and to a group gathered outside the mine gates," said company spokesman Grant Stuart.

He said the suspension notice meant that workers who did not stay in hostels were now locked out and mine operations remained shut down.

A group of workers who had earlier gathered at the mine gates had been dispersed by police, said Stuart.

On Friday, disciplinary hearings would be held for all the workers who had been on strike since Monday.

"We have invited them to make representations."

Stuart said a possible outcome of the hearings was dismissals.
