A Pakistani couple charged with kidnapping and attempted murder appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Khalid Ayub and his girlfriend Khadija Khan were expected to apply for bail.

The matter was temporarily stood down while the court waited for their documents.

Wearing a blue and purple shawl, Khan spent a few minutes talking to her father Abdul, her brother Hoosen and stepmother Zohra. Ayub returned to the police cells.

They were arrested on January 10 for allegedly kidnapping six-month-old Revelation Jones and trying to slit his nanny's throat in Bezuidenhout Valley, where they were renting a room in the child's family's house.

The infant's father received an sms that the couple wanted R100 000 in exchange for the baby's safe return.

The baby was unharmed when he was found.

Khan has three children from a previous marriage: two boys aged two and six, and a seven-year-old girl.

She is reportedly seven months pregnant with a fourth child, which is believed to be Ayub's.

After their first court appearance last week, Khan's father told reported had come to his house with the baby, but had refused to say where they had found him.

Khan said his daughter had been "scared, frightened and was crying a lot".
