The microwave oven revolutionised cooking but now a "reverse-microwave" aims to revolutionise cooling - it can chill a drink in 45 seconds.

Until now there has not been a gadget on the market that could cool things quickly.

The new system can cool drinks - including wine and fizzy drinks - from room temperature to 4C in a matter of seconds.

It can cool drinks in all types of container to the specified temperature without affecting the taste or killing the fizz in carbonated drinks.

The technology was developed with the help of research funding from the EU.

The beverage to be cooled is rotated at high speed around two axes in water.

V-Tex, which invented the technology, said that the process consumes at least 80% less energy than most other standard drinks chillers.
