A man accused of raping a six-week-old baby abandoned his application for bail in the Kimberley Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said.

NPA Northern Cape spokeswoman Mashudu Malabi said the 24-year-old, who cannot be named as he has not yet pleaded, refused legal representation.

The matter was postponed to February 12.

The man, believed to be the baby's uncle, allegedly raped the child on November 25.

The baby was admitted to hospital where she received intensive care.

She underwent an operation and was referred to the Universitas Academic Hospital in Bloemfontein, where she was in a stable condition.
