Sanral, traffic cops do different jobs

Sanral and the Gauteng community safety department share resources but do not perform the same function, the agency said on Friday.

"We have a relationship with each other and work for the same government and that is why we share resources," SA National Roads Agency Limited spokesman Vusi Mona said at a law enforcement operation at the N1 Allandale off-ramp in Midrand.

Department spokesman Thapelo Moiloa said traffic officers used Sanral equipment, including devices that could verify vehicle licences and driver's licences, and determine whether number plates were cloned.

Mona said the two entities were separate from each other.

"Traffic police enforce law enforcement and Sanral is a roads agency that deals with e-tolls," he said.

"Sanral does not have the authority to stop vehicles and ask them about their e-tolls."

Mona said the agency had other ways to get people to pay e-tolls.

"We send reminders and smses to motorists to remind them of their e-toll bill," he said.

Several traffic police vehicles, beacons, signs, and rumble strips were on the road as officers pulled motorists over.

A Sanral vehicle and trailer were parked alongside the road.

"There are no Sanral officials here and if they are here, it's just to provide assistance with the equipment," Moiloa said.
