Western Cape MEC for community safety Dan Plato has hit out at police intelligence for the large number of illegal guns on the Cape Flats.
Plato said this yesterday when he announced the launching of his department's policing needs and priorities consultations.
"Crime, and safety in general, is a major concern everywhere in South Africa but also here in Western Cape," said Plato.
"I am worried about the availability of guns. There is a problem with our gun-control laws. We need to tighten up in that regard because guns are easily available on the Cape Flats.
"The question is, where are they coming from? Who is supplying them and why can't [police] intelligence services identify and unravel the problem?"
Plato said gangsterism was getting out of hand, as was the worsening drugs problem. He said there were "issues" with the justice cluster.
"People with four charges walk out of court on R150 bail; that is a major problem."
