The Gauteng health department has begun relocating hundreds of patients from the old Natalspruit hospital in Katlehong to a new facility in Vosloorus.

Provincial health MEC Qedani Mahlangu said yesterday that the movement of patients was going smoothly and would be completed quickly.

Patients moved included those in ICU and babies in incubators.

About 30 corpses were also moved after the next-of-kin were informed about the relocation.

The new hospital, which cost more than R1-billion to build, has 821 beds and is to be officially opened on August 28 by Premier David Makhura and Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi.

Until it gets a new name it will continue to be known as Natalspruit hospital. It will provide primary healthcare , a 24-hour casualty unit, mother and child services, surgical theatres and mortuary services.

It will take referrals from clinics, community health centres and district hospitals in Katlehong, Vosloorus, Thokoza, Magagula Heights, Zonkizizwe, Phola Park, Palm Ridge, Eden Park, Germiston and Leondale.

The old hospital was built on dolomitic land and is structurally unsound.
