A man was electrocuted in an informal settlement in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday, KwaZulu-Natal emergency medical services said.

The man, believed to be aged 33, was declared dead on the scene in the Swapo settlement on Thursday afternoon, said spokesman Robert Mckenzie.

The circumstances leading to the electrocution were unknown as paramedics arrived at the scene after the man had died.

Mckenzie said paramedics had attended to similar cases in the area.

He urged bystanders wanting to help in such cases to be cautious as wires could still be live and they could get electrocuted by touching the victim.
