Iconic Protest

Sam Nzima's photograph of a dying Hector Pietersen being carried by his sister during the 1976 Soweto riots is one of the most iconic images. Gavin Jantjies' A South African Colouring Book series (1974/75), reuses photographs, drains them of colour and adds a palette to fill in the racial identity of the subjects.Sue Williamson's A Tale of Two Cradocks (1994) juxtaposes text and images from a guidebook to the area with the words and images of Nyameka Goniwe, the widow of murdered activist Matthew Goniwe.Sam Nhlengethwa's It Left Him Cold - The Death of Steve Biko (1990) makes reference to police minister Jimmy Kruger's response to the death in detention of the struggle leader.A 1955 photo by Peter Magubane featuring school-boycotters demanding free education is perhaps most resonant with current events...
