Gautrain operations are expected to resume at noon on Wednesday after thousands of commuters were left stranded by a technical failure. “The technicians are attending to the problem and we hope to fully restore services by mid-day today‚” ‏@TheGautrain tweeted.A glitch saw queues of people snaking through the Sandton station parking basement for over a kilometre.Bemused passengers were seen pacing out the fast-moving queue. "I started outside and I have just counted 1.3km‚" said Brian Farreria‚ who added that a colleague‚ who warned of hour-long delays and trains from Marlboro to Sandton not running at all‚ had made the suggestion.“I thought ‘why not?’ I nearly lost my place a couple of times‚ but at least it passed the time.”#Gautrain trended on Twitter with users posting photos of the queues and buses packed to capacity.Commuters on the North-South line were earlier told of setbacks via Twitter - ‏@TheGautrain – and advised that a “Gautrain bus service will operate between Sandton & Park Stations”‚ while the “train service between Sandton & Hatfield continues to operate to schedule”.People using the line to ORT International Airport faced missing their flights as that service failed to start on schedule: “1st train from OR Tambo delayed by 1 hour. Train service btwn Sandton & Park temporarily disrupted. Buses used btwn Sandton & Park.1/2”.No reasons were initially given for the delays and calls to Gautrain for comment went unanswered. However‚ eNCA quoted Gautrain spokesperson Kesagee Nayager as saying the delays stemmed from a train that was stuck “in the vicinity” of the Sandton station. She gave no indication as to how long the problem would take to rectify.Commuters at Rosebank station – which falls between Sandton and Park - appeared to take the disruption with minimal grumbling‚ with many saying it only added a short increase to their travel times‚ but Talk Radio 702’s Aki Anastasiou described the situation at Sandton as “chaos”.‏@TheGautrain tweeted this advice: “Passengers travelling btwn Sandton and Park stations are advised to make alternate arrangements. Gautrain bus operating btwn these stations”‚ but made no mention of passengers affected on the ORT line.In the absence of official comment‚ cable theft and fare increases were among the reasons cited as possible reasons for the delays by irate commuters who took to Twitter to voice their frustration.Señor Bob ‏@_NateO_tweeted: “@702JohnRobbie so the temporary cessation of gautrain operation is due to cables that were stolen along the rosebank-sandton line....HOW?”Anti Corrupt ‏@Moeriusie was annoyed at the lack of communication: “@TheGautrain @EWNTraffic and yet there was no wanring untill u arrived at the station. Did u forget about sms or the app warning u have?”Yule ‏@YuleD‚ however‚ appeared to have been forewarned at tweeted: “@ZenzoM_ @ThandoPeaches @TheGautrain we got smses though” with an attached screengrab of the missive. The delay was particularly sore for Hoxani Wa ka Maphali ‏@HoxaniM to take: “After I ran @ComradesRace no @TheGautrain Operations in Park-Sandton.I'm standing& stuck in traffic. All the running pains coming back again.”Marco D. ‏@markosix had a novel idea to make up for the discomfort: “Gautrain must give the other kids complimentary KrispyKreme Donuts and coffee. What an inconvenience!”That “Gautrain’s Fare Increase” was to be implemented on June 1 – Wednesday - was lost on KARABO ‏@AnswerBii‚ who said: “So gautrain fares also going up today. I wish I left yesterday eish”‚ while Vanessa Mahlinza ‏@VanessaM_17 lamented: “Wana increase train fare but the service and the way this was handled .... Poor ! Mxim #gautrain”.hot sauce ‏@Keneilwe__ didn’t mince her words: “for the first time ever i wasn't late and then the Gautrain f***s it all up”. - TMG Digital/The Times..
