Health services provided in Khayelitsha by students from the University of Cape Town remained suspended on Monday following recent armed attacks on them.
UCT spokesman Patricia Lucas said that Bangiso Drive in Site B‚ Khayelitsha‚ had been identified as a “crime hotspot” and that security concerns would first be addressed.
TMG Digital reported last week that UCT had suspended its student health services in the area after six health sciences students were robbed at gunpoint outside Ummangaliso Primary School.
This was the second armed attack on UCT members in the area in two months.
“A meeting is scheduled for Tuesday … between UCT staff members and various stakeholders‚ including South African Police Services‚ Education Department officials‚ schools and community structures in Khayelitsha‚” said Lucas. “We hope that the outcome will benefit not only UCT teams but also those who live and work in the area.”
Services provided by medical‚ health and rehabilitation students serve hospitals‚ community health clinics and schools in Cape Town.
UCT voiced concern at the high levels of crime in the area after the students were held up at gunpoint in the latest incident‚ saying that the community had to fight a continuous battle for their safety and security.
