UP says ‘situation is very volatile’ as it bids to hold ‘engagements on free higher education’

Students at the University of Pretoria (UP) return from recess on Monday‚ but they won’t be going to classes or writing tests Instead‚ they have been invited to attend a “number of engagements between students and staff for this day to allow for all perspectives on the call for free higher education to be heard and recorded”. UP vice-chancellor Prof Cheryl de la Rey warned‚ however‚ that “the situation is currently very volatile and events might change on short notice in order to safeguard our students and staff”.She hoped that the engagements would result in roleplayers having “firm resolutions in place on Monday regarding the dialogue on free higher education so that we are able to resume classes as soon as possible”.Arrested students face immediate suspension as Wits reopens under heavy cop presenceThere was a heavy presence of police and private security personnel as the University of the Witwatersrand prepared to restart of its academic programme on Monday.“We are committed to concluding the academic year and are currently working on alternative arrangements to ensure that students are able to complete their studies‚” De la Rey said.“While the university recognises that parents and students are anxious to continue with the academic programme‚ I believe that it is in the interest of the safety of staff and students‚ in light of the recent violent incidents at other universities‚ for the UP community to reach a level of consensus that will help avoid any further disruption.” ..
