Two bus stops out of every five in Atlantis‚ outside Cape Town‚ were vandalised in November.

Brett Herron‚ the City of Cape Town mayoral committee member for transport‚ said the level of vandalism aimed at MyCiTi buses and infrastructure was shocking.

“Most disturbing of all is the fact that we are not seeing any behavioural change or decrease in the number of incidents reported each month‚” Herron said o 40% of bus shelters in Cape Town suburb vandalised in just a monthTwo bus stops out of every five in Atlantis‚ outside Cape Town‚ were vandalised in November.n Tuesday.

“Sadly‚ it is the commuters from these communities who suffer the most. They are the ones having to wait at bus stops with broken roofs and glass panels meant to protect them from the rain‚ wind and sun.”

As well as the vandalism at 41% of stops and shelters in Atlantis‚ 24% of those in Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha were attacked‚ 6% in the inner city and 7% in Table View.

Herron said a 17-year-old was arrested for stoning a MyCiTi bus in Atlantis. He will be charged with malicious damage to property on Sunday.

“We will also try to recover the costs of the damage… on Sunday morning. It will amount to at least R10 000.

“In November 2015‚ a youth from Atlantis pleaded guilty to the charge of malicious damage to property‚ following a stoning incident. He had to pay R9 000 into the city’s bank account as a result of the damage to the MyCiTi bus‚” said Herron.

Up to 20 stoning incidents a month were reported to Transport for Cape Town‚ he said‚ with the worst-affected areas being Atlantis‚ Khayelitsha‚ Mitchells Plain‚ Table View and Melkbosstrand.
