A gas leak at Foskor's acid division in Richards Bay, on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast, was under control on Friday morning.

Richards Bay Clean Air Association (RBCAA) public officer Sandy Camminga confirmed there was leak at the plant.

"As things stand, it has been controlled and the area is safe for all intents and purposes. In terms of details, I think it's going to be very sketchy to understand exactly what happened as there will obviously have to be a full-scale investigation," she told TimesLIVE.

It is believed ammonia had leaked.

"The city of uMhlathuze's fire and rescue services and its air quality management unit are on scene," Camminga said.

The plant produces sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid and granular fertiliser.
