A police car was stolen when a constable left his keys in the vehicle while he went into a toilet at the Pretoria West police station, the Pretoria News reported on Friday.

As the officer returned, he saw the bakkie leaving the station.

Police spokeswoman Captain Bonginkosi Msimango told the paper that the unmarked police double cab bakkie was later spotted and pursued.

"The vehicle was tailed up to the Ben Schoeman highway where it overturned. The suspect then tried to get into another vehicle but was arrested," she said.

Msimango said the suspect was being questioned but appeared disoriented following the accident.
