A man is expected to appear in the Beaufort West Magistrate's Court on Monday for allegedly shooting and wounding an ANC official, Western Cape police said.

The 24-year-old allegedly shot ANC Central Karoo regional secretary Windy Plaatjies as he was trying to break up a fight outside the Cosy Corner tavern in the Kwa-Mandlenkosi township, Beaufort West, Captain Malcolm Pojie said.

Plaatjies was hit in the shoulder. The shooting happened on Saturday around 04:30. Two people got into a fight in the tavern over a woman, and decided to settle their dispute in the street outside, which was when Plaatjies tried to intervene.

The man would face an attempted murder charge.

Head of the ANC's parliamentary constituency office in Beaufort West, Trudy Dijana, said Plaatjies was in a stable condition.
