ANC municipalities said to owe R2,8 billion to water boards

ANC-governed municipalities owe respective water boards R2.8 billion for water services in 2014/2015. Many of the municipalities have been consistently in arrears for the past five years. The Democratic Alliance said on Thursday that this had been revealed in a written parliamentary reply to a question it had submitted."Shockingly‚ Bushbuckridge municipality owes over R470 million whilst Matjhbeng municipality owes over R1.2 billion‚ almost half of all the arrears in the country‚” said Tarnia Baker‚ a DA member of Parliament’s Water and Sanitation Portfolio Committee.However the DA governed Western Cape has been able to keep this figure to under R1 million‚ Baker said.“Given that South Africa is a water constrained country and is currently facing its worst drought since 1992‚ it is unacceptable that the poor financial management of municipalities should hamper the delivery of drinking water‚” she added...
