DA councillors given ultimatum to deny or confirm they’re on ANC candidates’ list

DA Eastern Cape leader Athol Trollip has given three DA Nelson Mandela Bay councillors up until the end of the day to confirm or rubbish reports that they were on the ANC's councillor candidates’ list.Should Nico du Plessis‚ Penny Naidoo and Brian Kivedo fail to do so‚ the party will kick-start a process to terminate their membership.The Herald reported on Wednesday that a secret recording revealed that Du Plessis was the ANC's Ward 13‚ Helenvale‚ candidate‚ and that Naidoo‚ Kivedo and former DA councillor Knight Mali were on the PR list.It was confirmed by ANC regional list committee member Mtwabo Ndube.Naidoo said on Tuesday that she could not comment on the matter. Attempts to reach Du Plessis and Kivedo for comment have been unsuccessful.READ MORE: Trollip said on Wednesday that he had previously challenged the three councillors on the allegations that they were in discussions with the ANC in the past."I've written to these councillors - and I challenged them on these allegations in the past - today to inform them that they must confirm or deny these allegations by the end of the day."If they don't deny or don't respond‚ we will proceed with termination [or] cessation of their membership‚" Trollip said.The ANC is pinning its hopes on the three councillors‚ as well as about three other former DA activists‚ to help regain its support in Port Elizabeth's northern areas.Trollip does not think that their moving to the ANC would affect the DA's election campaign."They've been disaffected for some time and we believe that the successful ward candidates and those successfully on our list are the ones that will determine our success‚ not those who've gone to another party‚" Trollip said...
