The hit documentary about musician Rodriguez, which sold out in theatres across the country has become the most successful documentary of all time in South Africa.
Searching for Sugarman has made over R2 million at the box office and is currently still screening exclusively at Cinema Nouveau and select Ster-Kinekor Theatres – and shows continue to sell out.
Winner of the Audience Award at the Melbourne International Film Festival, the documentary made over R1 million at the box office after just three weeks of its limited release. Some Cinema Nouveau sites reported Searching for Sugarman receiving standing ovations from audiences while at many sites across the country the documentary was sold out all opening weekend.
The film about Rodriguez, a mysterious Detroit singer-songwriter whose debut album Cold Fact was a source of hope and inspiration to South Africans.
Years later two South Africans set out to investigate what happened to the musical legend, only to discover that in the rest of the world, nobody even knows his name. Directed by Malik Bendjelloul, Searching for Sugarman is a story that will make the hairs stand up on your neck as you witness what one man’s music can do for an entire nation and what a nation’s love can do for one man.
